Sen. B. Everett Jordan today reopened the old question about construction of a flood-control dam on Deep River north of Randleman, requesting survey funds from the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The Deep River dam, a question mark since the first survey in the WPA-PWA days, has been proposed as one of a network of dams to curb flood damage in the Cape Fear River Basin. In recent months the issue has bogged down in a hassle between the U.S. Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture about whether farm ponds or larger river dams are the most advisable.
Jordan’s request asks for $30,000 for surveys on the Cape Fear River Basin Project. The amount is one of the smaller items included in a larger request totaling more than $5 million for 15 major water projects in North Carolina.

The Asheboro Friends Meeting congregation will hold the official opening of their new building on Sunday, May 1, with the laying of the cornerstone after the morning service.
The message will be delivered by the Rev. Seth Hinshaw, former pastor of the church and now secretary of the North Carolina Yearly Meeting. After the laying of the cornerstone, a picnic lunch will be served in the fellowship hall.
The current minister, the Rev. Bascom Rollins, extends a cordial invitation to all members and friends to attend the service.
The meetinghouse, located at the corner of Kivett and Main streets, was first occupied Jan. 3, 1960, and contains an auditorium with seating for 350 downstairs and a balcony that seats 50. There are 23 Sunday school rooms.
Asheboro Friends was organized in 1913 with 17 charter members.
