Mason named to Super Lawyers

ASHEBORO – Attorney Robert A. Mason of Asheboro has been named to the 2010 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers. Each year, no more than 5 percent of the state’s lawyers receive the honor. Mason was also named in the 2009 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers.

Mason was listed in the January edition of Charlotte magazine, and his profile included in The New York Times (Charlotte edition), as well as the 2010 edition of North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine, which is distributed to attorneys in North Carolina and ABA accredited law school libraries. Super Lawyers magazine is published by Minneapolis-based Law & Politics.

Mason is the owner of Mason Law PC in Asheboro and a partner in MasonCerbone, a Savannah, Ga., firm. Both firms are devoted to meeting the legal challenges of seniors, the disabled and their families, using an array of sophisticated legal techniques.

The new RBC Bank signs have a lighter energy footprint, with LED light bulbs that use less energy, last longer and are more efficient than those manufactured in earlier years.

First Bancorp reports earnings

TROY – First Bancorp, the parent company of First Bank, said fourth quarter net income available to common shareholders was $4.3 million compared to $5.0 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2008. Earnings per diluted common share were $0.25 in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to $0.30 in the fourth quarter of 2008.

For the year ended Dec. 31, 2009, the company reported net income available to common shareholders of $56.3 million compared to $22.0 million reported for 2008. Earnings per diluted common share were $3.37 for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009, compared to $1.37 for 2008.

In the second quarter of 2009, the Company realized a $67.9 million gain related to the acquisition of Cooperative Bank in Wilmington. The after-tax impact of this gain was $41.1 million, or $2.46 per diluted common share.

The company’s provision for loan losses amounted to $6.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to $3.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The higher provision was necessary due to higher loan losses that the company has experienced in the difficult economic environment.

The company recorded approximately $1 million in preferred stock dividends in each quarter of 2009 related to the Jan. 12, 2009 issuance of preferred stock to the U.S. Treasury. These amounts have reduced the company’s net income available to common shareholders. Total assets at Dec. 31, 2009, amounted to $3.5 billion, 28.9 percent higher than a year earlier.

Total loans at Dec. 31, 2009 amounted to $2.7 billion, a 20 percent increase from a year earlier, and total deposits amounted to $2.9 billion, a 41.4 percent increase from a year earlier.
