Tina Crutchfield Joins VISTA

ASHEBORO – Tina Crutchfield was recently sworn in as a member of Volunteers in Service to America, the national service program dedicated to helping fight poverty in the United States. Crutchfield has been assigned to Randolph County Senior Adults Association Inc. to help develop a capital campaign for the new activity center for seniors, which will be located at Old Cox Road near the N.C. Zoo.

Crutchfield has been an active volunteer in the community for the past five years. Crutchfield is a graduate of Colorado Technical University and serves as treasurer for United Way of Randolph County. In her new role as a VISTA member, one of her first projects will be to find funding through donations for the new proposed LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

For 40 years, Volunteers in Service to America has been helping bring communities and individuals out of poverty. Today, nearly 7,000 VISTA members serve in hundreds of nonprofit organizations and public agencies throughout the country – working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities or bridge the digital divide.



Family and Community Medicine of Asheboro joins Cornerstone

He holds the position of Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Whyte is certified by the American Board of Family Physicians.

First Bancorp declares dividend

TROY – First Bancorp, the parent company of First Bank, has declared a cash dividend of $0.08 per share payable Oct. 23, 2009 to shareholders of record as of Sept. 30, 2009. The $0.08 per share dividend rate is the same as the rate declared in the second quarter of 2009 and is a decrease from the $0.19 per share rate declared in the third quarter of 2008.

First Bancorp is a bank holding company headquartered in Troy with total assets of approximately $3.5 billion. Its principal activity is the ownership and operation of First Bank, a state-chartered community bank that now operates 98 branches, with 83 branches operating in the central piedmont and coastal regions of North Carolina, 10 branches in South Carolina and five branches in Virginia, where First Bank does business as First Bank of Virginia. Partnership elects officers

ASHEBORO – The Randolph County Partnership for Children board of directors recently added three new members and elected officers.

Tom Robins, an attorney with Bunch, Robins and Stubblefield, was re-elected as board chairman. Additional officers elected for the 2009-2010 period include Elbert Lassiter, plant manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, vice chairman; Dr. Pat Chamberlin, pediatrician, secretary; and Mel Neill, community volunteer, treasurer.

New board member include Lynn Dodge, district administrator with Guardian Ad Litem; Kevin Bowman of Learning Environments and chairman of Celebrate Liberty’s Children; and David Smith with Credit Bureau Collection Services and mayor pro-tem of Asheboro.

J.B. Griffith III of Liberty Advisors LLC retired this year as a director and was recognized at the August board of directors meeting for his six years of service as a board member and a past board chairman.



RBC Bank names new president

RALEIGH – Reginald Davis has been named president of RBC Bank. As president of RBC Bank, Davis will lead the bank’s client focused teams with responsibility for achieving and exceeding client satisfaction and revenue goals. Davis will oversee Retail Banking, Commercial Markets, Specialized Businesses, Private Banking and Residential Mortgages.

Davis had served in seven executive roles with Wachovia since 1985 when he graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Among his previous roles at Wachovia, Davis served as executive vice president and Eastern Banking Group executive, where he led Retail and Wholesale activities in 20 East Coast states to increase revenue and cross-sell of products. He also developed and executed a best practices program that improved consistency and performance and increased efficiency across the bank.

Davis will be based at RBC Bank’s corporate headquarters in Raleigh.



First Bancorp performance award

TROY – First Bancorp, the parent company of First Bank, was recently recognized by investment banking firm Sandler O’Neill & Partners, L.P., as one of the top performing small-cap banks in the nation for the second year in a row. New York-based Sandler O’Neill is one of the best-known and most highly regarded investment firms specializing in the commercial banking industry.

Out of 509 publicly traded banks and thrifts with a market cap of less than $2 billion, First Bancorp was one of only 30 institutions in the nation that was selected to Sandler O’Neill’s “Sm-All Star” list for 2009. First Bancorp was one of only eight institutions to be selected for this list in both 2008 and 2009, and First Bancorp was the only North Carolina bank on the 2009 list. The Sandler O’Neill analysis focused on growth, profitability, credit quality and capital strength.



RBC Bank names new CFO

RALEIGH – Glenn D. McCoy has been named chief financial officer of RBC Bank. As CFO, McCoy will lead the finance division in developing key strategic performance targets and partnering with the business to analyze and achieve those financial goals.

McCoy joins RBC Bank after 28 years with Wachovia Corporation and First Union, where he was most recently the chief financial officer of the Mortgage and Retail Credit division and led major initiatives that improved the division’s profitability and future capability.

McCoy is a graduate of Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., and received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. He will be based at RBC Bank’s corporate headquarters in Raleigh.



Physician completes recertification

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Dr. Karla Rene Smith has successfully completed the American Board of Family Medicine’s recertification examination.

Board certification confers a standard of excellence in knowledge and practice to physicians who not only certify via the examination process, but who also work diligently on the maintenance of these skills during the seven-year cycle between examinations.

To achieve recertification by the ABFM, a family physician must verify the completion of 300 hours of acceptable continuing medical education over the past six years; possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States; and successfully complete a one-day, written examination of cognitive knowledge and problem-solving abilities. This examination covers the disciplines of the specialty including, but not limited to: adult medicine; care of newborns, infants, children, and adolescents; maternity and gynecological care; community medicine; care of the older patient; human behavior and mental health; and care of the surgical patient.



Woodmen reps attend seminar

ASHEBORO – Three local Modern Woodmen of America representatives recently completed a five-day educational program at Modern Woodmen’s home office in Rock Island, Ill. The program focused on helping families with Modern Woodmen life insurance plans, annuities and fraternal member benefits.

Zoo recognized for exhibit design

ASHEBORO – The N.C. Zoo has received its 2009 Significant Achievement Award for Exhibit Design for its Watani Grasslands Reserve project. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums made the announcement Sept. 24.

“The North Carolina Zoo a leader in innovative exhibits that provide great habitats for the animals and meaningful educational opportunities for its visitors,” said Jim Maddy, AZA president and CEO. “The AZA Significant Achievement Award provides well-deserved national recognition for this important endeavor.”

With its annual Exhibit Award, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums recognizes excellence in the area of live animal display and exhibit design by an AZA-accredited Institution (US or International) or Related Facility member.

Watani Grasslands Reserve is an $8.5 million expansion and renovation of the Zoo’s African Elephant and Southern White Rhinoceros habitats and holding facilities.



Moffitt reappointed to Zoo Council

ASHEBORO – Walker Moffitt, a member of Asheboro City Council, has been reappointed to the N.C. Zoological Park Council. Moffitt is vice president of the utility division of Triangle Grading and Painting, a member of the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, the N.C. Zoo Council and a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.

The council advises the secretary of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources on concepts of and for the Zoological Park in Asheboro. The council also provides advice for construction, furnishings, operations and admissions fees for the park. The council has 15 members, each serving a six-year term. The governor appoints all members.
