NERMS makes history at Olympiad

LIBERTY — Northeastern Randolph Middle School's Husky Science Olympiad Team made history when it competed in the N.C. Science Olympiad's regional tournament held Feb. 20 in Greensboro. The Huskies were among schools from 11 counties to compete and were the only team from Randolph County.

Thirty three students entered 38 of 46 events, medaling in 16 of them. Twenty four Olympians earned a total of 37 medals. The junior varsity team capped a successful day, capturing second place in the team competition.

Varsity winners

Anatomy: Anna Brunner and Lexua McLaughlin, third place

Fossils: Noe Rodriguez and Caitlin Sheppard, third place

Pentathlon: Blake Becker, Taylor Faulkner, Jonathan King and Austin Young, fourth place

Science Crimebusters: Blake Becker and Jonna Nance, fourth place

Shock Value: Andrew Ainsworth and Lexua McLaughlin, fourth place

Trajectory: Blake Becker and Jonathan King, second place

Battery Buggy: Cohle McClintock and Cole Staley, first place

Dynamic Planet: Nick Caviness and Cole Staley, second place

Egg-O-Naut: Dustin Craven and Jacob Oake, second places

Experimental Design: Chrysta Davis, Zach Rothstein, and Kirsten Stovall, second place

Fossils: Erin Cox and Jorge Martinez, second place

Meteorology: Jacob Parrish and Kirsten Stovall, second place

Ornithology: Kimi Faircloth and Jacob Oakes, second place

Pentathlon: Megan Barnhart, Kimi Faircloth, Laura Gruer, and Annie Smith, second place
