N.C. Poet Laureate to headline event
North Carolina Poet Laureate Cathy Smith Bowers will join local poets for a reading at the Asheboro Public Library to kick off the annual statewide “Smartest Card” library card sign-up campaign. The reading by Bowers and an “open mike” organized by the Randolph Writers Group will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

Larry Routh’s 1964 Chevelle Malibu convertible has run the gamut from hay hauler to hotrod. Now it’s used to chauffeur VIPs at events such as the Asheboro Veterans Parade, the Millboro Fourth of July celebration and local Christmas parades.

Cooperative Extension to promote local foods
Mary Helen Ferguson with N.C. Cooperative Extension in Randolph County will be extension’s local foods coordinator, supporting the 10% Campaign, an effort to encourage North Carolina consumers to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on foods from local sources.

Young Life golf tourney is Aug. 19
Young Life of Randolph County will sponsor a golf tournament Aug. 19 at Pinewood Country Club to raise funds for the local chapter in its efforts to involve teenagers and adolescents with Christian precepts.
