She was a native of Welch, W.Va., homemaker and licensed practical nurse at Evergreens Health Care.

ASHEBORO – Mary Alice Baldwin, 84, of 414 Watkins St., died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral was held Jan. 29, 2010, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial was at Harshaw Grove Missionary Church cemetery.

She was former pastor of Emmanuel Chapel Holiness Church and member of Mt. Zion Holy Church.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – William Russell Brown, formerly of Asheboro, N.C., died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010.

A memorial service was held Jan. 31, 2010, at the Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel & Waterfront Conference Center in Portsmouth.

He was a 1971 Asheboro High School graduate, 1975 UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, earned a law degree from the University of Richmond, practiced law in Portsmouth, was past president of the Portsmouth Optimists Club, past president of Girls Inc. Center for Youth and president of the Portsmouth Sports Club.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Bass Brown; son, Christian McLeod Bass Brown; mother, Doris Brown of Asheboro, N.C.; brother, Robert S. Brown of Burgaw, N.C.; sisters, Tammie Johnson and Kim Sumner, both of Asheboro, N.C.

LaRue ‘Rooney’ Cox Jr.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – LaRue Bynum “Rooney” Cox Jr., 59, of Daytona Beach, formerly of Trinity, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 15, 2010.

The funeral was held Jan. 31, 2010, at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting in Trinity, N.C., where he was a member, with Pastor Randy Quate officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was a native of High Point, N.C., widower of Marcia Cox, had worked at Carolina Springs, had owned a furniture business and a Quixtar business, and volunteered at Daytona Beach Health & Rehab.

RANDLEMAN – Terry Wayne Doswell, 50, of 629 Smoke Tree Lane, died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at his home.

He was a native of Bladensburg, Md., and avid weightlifter.

ASHEBORO – Mary Jo Durham, 89, of Asheboro, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation.

ASHEBORO – David Robert Elliott, 77, of 330 Marmaduke Circle, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 3) at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Michael Holder, Dr. Donald Haynes and Dr. James Ferree officiating.

Burial with military honors will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Asheboro, Korean War Army veteran, UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, former owner of Elliott Office Equipment Co., past president of the Asheboro Rotary Club, board member of the Asheboro-Randolph YMCA, the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce, RBC Centura and Ducks Unlimited, founder of the Asheboro City Amateur and founding member of the National Golf Club of Pinehurst.

He was a native of Chatham County, widower of Ruby R. Martindale, World War II Navy veteran and retired superintendent with Seaboard Coastline Railroad in Richmond, Va.

He was a native of North Wilkesboro, Korean War Air Force veteran, Pfeiffer College and UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, taught for Randolph County Schools, worked for the North Carolina Zoo and drove a handicapped school bus, coached basketball and tennis at the YMCA, Asheboro Parks & Recreation and Dave’s Mountain Racquet Club, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and had been a member of the Asheboro Jaycees and the Optimist Club.
