Hopes of an early extension of Asheboro’s city limits were expressed this week as city officials ordered a survey of the area involved and set a public hearing.

Although no definite lines have been determined, the new city limits line would extend just east of the intersection of Old Salisbury Road and Salisbury Street Extension, extend to the new U.S. 64 Bypass just east of the intersection with NC 902, move along the northern shoulder of the bypass to a point just east of Cox Road, then to a point south of Atlantic Avenue and back to the city limits at Country Club Drive.

The area would take in the offices of Randolph Electric Membership Corp., Randolph Telephone Membership and Walker Shoe Co.

If no formidable opposition is expressed at the public hearing, the City Council can annex the territory by resolution.

On the other hand, the Council can order a referendum upon presentation of a petition from 15 percent of qualified voters in the affected area.

Two garment industries have indicated an interest in establishing a plant in Coleridge.

Julian Brady of Brady Manufacturing Co., which moved its handkerchief plant to Coleridge after fire destroyed its Ramseur plant last winter, said both firms showing interest are established businesses. Their primary concern is finding women experienced in operating commercial sewing machines. That includes workers skilled as seamers, in the operation of bedspread machines and other types of sewing machines.

“The managements’ decisions will depend a great deal on the number of applications they receive,” Brady said.

The Asheboro City Council approved without opposition Thursday a recommendation from the local dental and medical associations for the fluoridation of the city water supply.

The vote was unanimous following a presentation of the advantages of fluoride by Dr. Joseph Suggs, spokesman for the Randolph County Dental Association. It’s believed fluoride combats tooth decay in children.

The Council voted to file formal application with the State Board of Health for permission to fluoridate the water and to purchase the necessary equipment.
