Asheboro High School’s Blue Comets added the final touch to a perfect season Friday night in Salisbury as they trounced Hickory 33-14 to win the Western North Carolina High School Athletic Association football title. The 12-0 season is being hailed as the greatest ever at Asheboro High. An estimated 6,500 fans witnessed the victory.

Experience, stamina and a sturdy defensive line paid off for the Comets as they bounced back from a 14-14 halftime tie and put on a second-half performance that caused more than one Asheboro fan to comment that the team had reached its prime when the game ended. Stars of the game included QB “Strawberry” Wheless, Mark Leggett, Jerry Rowe and Bobby Fritz on offense, and Tony Brantly, Bunny Bowman and David Dalton on defense.

Asheboro will ring in the Christmas shopping season Friday evening with the largest parade ever staged in the Center of North Carolina. Thirty floats and four marching bands will wind their way through the Asheboro business district. More than 100 pretty girls, including two beauty queens, will add to the color of the festivities. Elaine Herndon of Durham, the former Miss North Carolina and current Miss Dixie, and Carolyn Jones of Ramseur, the Queen of Randolph, will be featured. Others will represent the various schools of Asheboro and Randolph County. Sponsored by the Retail Trade Division of the Asheboro Chamber of Commerce, the parade is the most auspicious ever conducted in the county and will rival Greensboro’s Holiday Jubilee Parade. “It will be the most elaborate event by far ever staged in Asheboro,” said G.L. Harris, parade chairman.

Worth Furniture Company officials have announced the sale of the firm’s assets to Benedict Inc. of Ridgeway, Va. The transaction includes the sale of all work in progress at the local plant and the company’s entire line of patterns, styles and designs of bedroom and diningroom furniture. James Pearl, president, said the company ceased production on Nov. 1. The firm had employed about 95 people. Pearl said plans are being considered to re-open the plant under a different name. Worth Furniture bedroom and diningroom furniture had been marketed nationally and had gained prominence in the furniture field since its appearance in June, 1956. Benedict plans to continue the Worth lines.

Lucy Blue Morrow will join the staff of the Randolph County home agent on Dec. 1 as assistant agent, Rose Bladgett announced. Morrow is the wife of Roger Morrow. The couple moved to Asheboro this fall when Roger was transferred to the Cetwick plant of Burlington Industries.She will be rememebered in Asheboro as a practice home economics teacher at Asheboro High School in the spring of 1957 while she was a senior at Woman’s College in Greensboro. She was graduated from W.C. with a degree in home economics and was a member of Omicron Nu, a national honorary home economics society.

Randolph Macon and Resal Craven were elected president and vice president, respectively, of the Randolph County 4-H Electric Workshop on Saturday. Other officers are Floyd Morgan, secretary, and Roy Caudill, reporter.
