50 Years Ago – Dec. 17, 1958

From The Randolph Guide – Dec. 17, 1958

An election has been called to allow voters outside Asheboro to decide if they want to be annexed. The Asheboro Board of Commissioners approved the election following a public hearing at which they received a petition with some 220 names. The petition signers expressed opposition to being annexed. City Manager Clifford Pace said state statutes would prohibit a referendum before March 1959. City Clerk Charles Hughes said a survey of the area under consideration indicates there are about 435 qualified voters living there. The proposed annexation area extends just east of the Old Salisbury Road intersection with Salisbury Street Extension, then to the new U.S. 64 Bypass some 200 yards east of the intersection with N.C. 902. From there the line extends along the northern shoulder of the bypass to a point just east of Cox Road, then to a point south of Atlantic Avenue and back to the city limits at Country Club Drive.

Santa Claus arrived early for three Randolph County boys Saturday as they were presented with shiny new bicycles by Asheboro merchants. Franklin York, 13, of Route 3, Asheboro, a student at Farmer School; Johnny Batten, 8, of Route 2, Asheboro, a student at Tabernacle; and Morris King, 16, a student at Seagrove; were winners of bikes in the first of three drawings sponsored by the Retail Trade Division of the Asheboro Chamber of Commerce. Bonnie Lambeth, 5, of Route 2, Asheboro, drew out the lucky numbers.

Harold Snider, vocational-agricultural teacher at Liberty High School, is the 1958 Man of the Year in Liberty. The award, a project of the Liberty Rotary Club, was presented by Dr. Walter Neal, last year’s recipient. Snider, active in youth work in the community, is married to the former Winfred Cates of Franklinville. Past winners of the award include Dr. R.D. Patterson, H.P. Coward, Paul H. Smith, W. Godfrey Welch, Guy W. Smith and T. Phil Johnson.
