ASHEBORO – Leona Catherine Johnson Carter, 83, of 309 Freedom Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at Randolph Hospital.

No service is planned.

She was a Philadelphia native and homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Ellen Valentine Price of Asheboro and Janice Marie Carter of Las Vegas; sons, John E. Sewell of Las Vegas and Eugene C. Carter of Sylmar, Calif.; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.



Ethan A. Craven

SEAGROVE – Ethan Alexander Craven, 16, of 4904 Osborn Mill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Bo Wansley officiating. Burial will be at Callicutt Chapel Wesleyan Church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native and attended Southwestern Randolph High School.

Survivors include his father, Burit Craven II of the home; mother and stepfather, Rosa and Santiago Cervantes of Asheboro; sister, Buranda Craven of Asheboro; brother, L.B. Craven of Asheboro; grandparents, Red Cagle, Minerva and Donald York, and Doyle and Nan Craven, all of Asheboro.

Edna L. Hodge

ASHEBORO – Edna Lee Hodge, 80, of 400 Vision Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Woodland Hill.

A graveside service was held Jan. 12, 2010, at Biscoe Cemetery.

She was a native of Grayson County, Va., and textile worker.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Ann Tart of Franklinville, Linda Bullard of Seagrove, Rhonda Tart of Randleman, Denise Luther of Asheboro and Debbie Street of Greensboro; sister, Betty Ann Cook of Franklinville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.



Stella P. Hodgin

RANDLEMAN – Stella Perdue Hodgin, 83, of Randleman, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010.

The funeral was held Jan. 6, 2010, at Level Cross United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was at Centre Friends Meeting cemetery.

She was the widow of Devane S. Hodgin, 1943 Stokesdale High School graduate, had worked for Jefferson Pilot and retired from Commonwealth Hosiery.

Survivors include son, Rick Hodgin of Level Cross; daughters, Barbara Jackson of Greensboro and Linda Marquis of Holualoa, Hawaii; sister, Evelyn Hutchens of Stokesdale; three grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild.

SEAGROVE – Bobby Craven Jordan, 80, of 1264 N.C. 705 South, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his home.

The funeral was held Jan. 13, 2010, at Center Cross Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Justus McKeel and the Rev. Scott Kidd officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County and retired carpenter.

LIBERTY – Michael Curtis Kennedy, 56, of Liberty, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at his home.

Rev. Carlos M. King

ASHEBORO – The Rev. Carlos McKinley King, 90, of 1165 Lexington Commons, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

The funeral was held Jan. 9, 2010, at Sunset Avenue Church of God with Pastor J.C. Miles, the Rev. Tommy Fuquay and Bishop Tommy McGhee officiating. Burial was at New Hope Memorial Gardens.

He was a native of Ararat, Va., graduate of Holmes Bible College, High Point University and UNC-Greensboro, retired Pentecostal Holiness minister, served as guidance counselor at Eastern Randolph High School and as chaplin at Randolph Hospital, charter member of Asheboro Pentecostal Holiness Church and lifelong member of Ararat Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Evans King of the home; daughter, Priscilla Ruth King Mace of Lexington; brother, Warren Garland King of Nashville, Tenn.; sisters, Lena King Connally of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mildred King Cox of Stuart, Va., Arlene King Chitwood of Ridgeway, Va.

ASHEBORO – Goldie Marcille Kirk, 82, of Poor Valley, Va., died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Cross Road Retirement Community.

She was the widow of Arvil Jack Kirk and a Baptist.

ASHEBORO – Lois Spivey Moore, 88, of 500 Mountain Top Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home.

She was a Moore County native, widow of Graham V. Moore and retired textile worker.

Robert W. Osborne Sr.

RANDLEMAN – Robert W. Osborne Sr. of Randleman died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Woodland Hill.

The funeral was held Jan. 6, 2010, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home. Burial was at Lakeview Memorial Park.

He was a native of Ottumwa, Iowa, widower of Kate Osborne and Mae Osborne, and retired from Thompson-Arthur Paving Co.

ASHEBORO – Hazel Ruth Hoover Phillips, 84, of 692 Luck Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Randolph Hospital.

She was a Randolph County native, widow of Ira Millard Phillips and had worked at Asheboro Hosiery.

He was a native of New York City, a Korean War Air Force veteran and retired from Food Lion.

ASHEBORO – Lawrence Gordon Sours, 95 of Farmville, Va., formerly of Asheboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.

The funeral was held Jan. 8, 2010, at Farmville United Methodist Church, Farmville, Va. Interment services were Jan. 8 at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. 

He was a native of Chatham, Va., widower of Dorothy Lewallen Sours, retired funeral director at Pugh Funeral Home, former member of Central United Methodist Church and former member of Asheboro Rotary Club.

Survivors include daughter, Llewellyn Sours Watson of Farmville, Va.; two grandsons; four grandchildren.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Ellen Covington Steere, 91, of North Myrtle Beach, formerly of Randolph County, N.C., died Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at her home.

A private service was held.

She was a native of Ramseur, retired nurse and member of First United Methodist Church in Asheboro.

Survivors include sons, E.H. “Pete” Steere III and John “Deegie” Steere, both of North Myrtle Beach; sisters, Doris Blanche Covington of Greensboro and Mary Covington Smith of Asheboro; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

He was a Chatham County native, widower of Dixie Creven White, and retired salesman with Keith’s Hardware and Ramseur Building Supply.
