ERHS matmen best Reidsville 60-24

RAMSEUR – Eastern Randolph High School closed out Mid-State 2A Conference regular season wrestling in impressive style last week by blasting visiting Reidsville 60-24.

The Wildcats hope to continue that momentum this weekend as they host the MSC wrestling tournament, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.

Action against the Rams was dominated from the start by Eastern Randolph as the Wildcats roared to victory by winning seven of the first eight weight classes – six of them by pins.

The early surge gave ER a commanding 42-6 lead on the way to improving to 3-2 in the conference and 12-16 overall.

After an early forfeit, Ryan Renck (130) evened the score at 6-6 with a second-period pin, then Joey Pippin (135) put the Cats in front to stay with a second-period pin.

Daniel Carr (140) kept the string going with a first-period pin, Cole Muehlbach (145) won a forfeit, Micah Dunlap (152) posted a second-period pin, Cody Muehlbach (160) notched a second-period pin and A.J. Sudsbury (171) sailed to a first-period pin.

Reidsville finally broke the string but Corey Cardin (215) got ER rolling again with a second-period pin and Britton Lewis (heavyweight) captured a pin in the first period. J.T. Mabe (119) capped off the performance by pinning his opponent in the first period. Tim Beasley (125) won with a pin in a preliminary match.



Wildcat cagers suffer MSC defeat

RAMSEUR – Eastern Randolph suffered a twinbill defeat last week in Mid-State 2A Conference basketball.

Burlington Cummings invaded Wildcat Gym and captured the sweep, taking the girls matchup 58-43 and capping that with a 80-47 win in the boys game.

The Wildcat boys slipped to a 0-6, 1-18 record while the girls dropped to 3-16 on the season.

Ledford hosted ER in a nonconference doubleheader earlier, capturing a 80-38 victory in the girls contest and 53-41 triumph against the ER boys.

Weather permitting, Eastern Randolph was slated to host Bartlett Yancey earlier this week in a tripleheader beginning with the jayvee boys. Friday, Eastern Randolph is scheduled to travel to Reidsville.

Against Ledford, the Wildcats played close for more than three quarters, but saw the Panthers roar back in the fourth. Topping ER was Khyri Crawford with 16 points and James Cannon with 15.

The Wildcat girls stayed close for a quarter but Ledford unleashed some hot shooting in the second stanza to pull away. ER was led by Logan Castleberry with 21 points.

In the Cummings game, ER fell behind 11-5 in the first period then saw the Cavaliers run away with a 27-point outburst in the second quarter for a 38-19 halftime cushion.

Cannon with 16 points led the Wildcats.

After leading 14-9 after one quarter, the ER girls fell behind and trailed 25-21 at the half. Cummings took control in the third period, outscoring ER 19-6. Eastern Randolph was paced by Castleberry with 16 points.



Wrestling tourney shifts to ERHS

RAMSEUR – The winter weather that hit Randolph County last weekend caused several changes in the sports schedule for this week.

Among those changes was the site of the Mid-State 2A Conference wrestling tournament, originally set to be hosted by Providence Grove High School last Saturday. Snow and ice forced postponement and the site has now been shifted to Eastern Randolph on Saturday, Feb. 6.

First round matches begin at 9 a.m. at the ERHS gym.



Weather delays cage tourney

TRINITY – Action in the Randolph County middle school basketball tournament was postponed from last weekend because of the winter storm that moved through the state.

Semifinal round play and the championship game in both boys and girls divisions were postponed and will be rescheduled when school resumes.

First round results from the girls bracket saw top-seeded Uwharrie defeat Randleman 39-10. Second-seeded Northeastern Randolph was a 44-6 winner over North Asheboro, third-seeded Southeastern Randolph won 34-19 over Southwestern Randolph and fourth-seeded Archdale-Trinity took a 28-13 victory over South Asheboro.

In the boys division, No. 1 Archdale-Trinity was a 39-20 winner over North Asheboro, No. 2 Randleman won 59-19 over SW Randolph, No. 3 NE Randolph lost 41-39 to SE Randolph and No. 4 Uwharrie was defeated 37-31 by South Asheboro.

When action resumes, the Uwharrie girls will take on Archdale-Trinity in a 4:15 p.m. matchup followed by a 5:30 p.m. boys bracket game between South Asheboro and Archdale-Trinity. In the second session, NE Randolph takes on SE Randolph in a 7 p.m. girls contest followed by the Randlman and SE Randolph boys at 8:15 p.m.

The girls championship will be the following night at 6 p.m. followed at 7:30 p.m. by the boys title clash. All action will be at Wheatmore High School.
